The Valley of Trails offers countless opportunities for people wanting to enjoy short hikes or walks. If you were so inclined you could probably do a different route every day of the year. We define a short hike as anything taking an hour or less. Don’t confuse short with boring, because many of the most beautiful spots in the Alberni Valley can be reached in less than an hour from a trail head. These short hikes are as varied as the terrain in the Valley of Trails.
Each trail in this section is assigned a level of difficulty: easy, moderate, or hard. Easy trails offer limited elevation gain and good surfaces. Moderate trails entail moderate elevation gain and some scrambling. Hard trails are generally steep and may require work locating the trail.
The Valley of Trails is located in some of Vancouver Island’s most active logging territory. As a result hiking trails and logging roads change constantly due to logging, road building and deactivations. It is your responsibility to hike with care – picking safe routes and watching your step. Many of the roads leading to trailheads in the Alberni Valley are gravel. If you are renting a car, be sure you are allowed to take it on a gravel road without invalidating your insurance coverage. While most logging roads are open to the public at all times, logging companies have the right to shut down public use of the roads for public safety during harvesting, construction, and extreme fire hazard. Always drive with you head lights on, yield to logging traffic, and obey all signs.
Finally, some of the best trails in the Alberni Valley travel over private land (owned by logging companies or private citizens). It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the appropriate permission to use the hiking trails. Always use basic wilderness ethic when hiking on Vancouver Island: stay on the trail; use campfire sparingly and ensure they are extinguished; bury all human waste; and do not disturb local flora, fauna, or artifacts.
